American White Pelican

We had some unexpected guests visit the farm this spring!

Large and majestic, the American white pelican has the longest wingspan of any bird in Oregon. This pelican makes unusually long flights for feeding and migration and at great distances, soaring flocks have been reported as UFOs.

In Oregon, this big bird breeds at a few interior sites in the spring including Crook County, where we happen to be located. Their colonies are vulnerable to disturbance and habitat loss but at the farm they know they can find food, clean water and a safe place to rest along the Crooked River. It means a lot to us that we can cohabitate and live alongside nature's beautiful creatures. These are resources to be shared and we are grateful for their stopover.
